A Dutch Mother
Alexander Brantingham Simpson, Artist
About the Work
"
The
title.
A
Dutch
Mother,
is
ambiguous
as
this
is
little
evidence
to
support
family
life
with
the
exception
of
a
child's
chair
to
the
far
right.
The
gesturing
of
the
mother's
arms
could
suggest
a
lost
baby.
Regardless,
she
is
surrounded
by
the
tiresome,
and
arduous
job
of
folding
the
hand-washed
laundry.
The white of the mother's apron and headdress are a stark contrast to the dark interior. Simply furnished, the room is typical of a humble, working class home.
A.B. Simpson was a British artist who exhibited at the Royal Academy (1904-20) and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (1904-31)."
