About the Work
A landscape painter in both oils and watercolour, Howorth's works were almost universally admired during his artistic career. The Wanganui Chronicle referred to them as ‘gems’, the Otago Daily Times called his paintings ‘spirited’ while the Dominion stated that his work was ‘really admirable’ and the Press ‘excellent’. In 'The Wanganui River' we see his adept use of colour and technique to capture the glassy water and lush bush of the Whanganui. His popularity waned with rise of Modernism but his work and style of painting form an important part of the history of landscape painting in New Zealand.
