Description
Oil painting showing Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane during the events leading up to his crucifixion. He is dressed in white robes with a crimson red/burgundy cloak spilling down his back. He is depicted with a golden disc or halo surrounding his head. He is kneeling with his front against a rocky outcrop, with his arms outstretched in front of him and his chin raised to the sky, his eyes closed, praying to God. Behind him is a kneeling angel with wings wearing a red cloak with head bowed, eyes closed also praying with their arms crossed across their chest. To the lower left of the angel two of the disciples are shown seated with their heads down and backs to the viewer one in blue, the other in orange/brown robes. Across the bottom of the image is another disciple lying down with their face towards the viewer, their eyes closed in sleep, wearing robes in burgundy. The figures are surrounded with a rhythm of undulating lines of bare trees and rocks. Extending from the lower right corner of the image is a distorted undulating tree with red flame like leaves on the ends of the branches. Behind Jesus at the upper right corner of the image are white and dark clouds. The scene is at night-time so is quite dark with the bright white of Jesus's robes and golden halo forming the focal point by contrast with the darker tones elsewhere.
