Rubbo was well known for giving his students a good grounding in working with colour. Teaching art in the 1930's was an interesting task as trends fluctuated between the modern and academic styles. This image fluctuates between the intence colour palette of a regional realist artist and the brushwork of an impressionist. It is an example of Rubbo's presumption towards finding a balanced approached to image making through using ones intuition.
