Ellis's
most
well
known
works,
an
affectionate
portrait
of
her
teacher,
mentor
and
friend
Antonio-Dattilo-
Rubbo.
He
wrote
to
her
about
this
work
saying
"
Dear
Miss
Ellis..,
you
have
achieved
the
best
by
a
good
compasition,
spported
by
strong
drawing,
virile
colour
and
excellent
touch.
It
is
a
well
balanced
work,
and
I
heartily
congratulate
you
with
my
good
wishes
to
see
the
painting
hanged
in
worthy
art
gallery
-
if
possible
in
your
native
land."
This work was submitted to the Gallery of New South Wales for the Archibald prize, an annual portraiture prize, where she was rewarded as one of the runner ups. In 1952, this work was again shown in the MOstre d'Ottremare in Naples (Rubbo's birth place) under the name "Rittratto del Maestro".
This work was donated by Ellis in a group of 8 works. According to the catalogue of the exhibition "Frances Ellis 1900 - 1971" it was his written wish that this work be gifted to the Sarjeant gallery spefically.
