About the Work
Frederick Evans was known particularly for his images of medieval cathedrals such as this one of the Durham Cathedral which he took a selection of images, 5 of which including this can be seen in a book published by the Getty Museum "The Photographs of Frederick H. Evans" By Anne M. Lyden.

The cathedral itself was given the status of a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986, and is described on it's website as " ‘one of the great architectural experiences of Europe’. It is renowned as a masterpiece of Romanesque (or Norman) architecture. It was begun in 1093 and largely completed within 40 years. It is the only cathedral in England to retain almost all of its Norman craftsmanship, and one of few to preserve the unity and integrity of its original design." (Accessed 5/02/13 http://www.durhamcathedral.co.uk/history).

This would describe the photographers interest in this particular cathedral as one of great beauty and significance in terms of medieval architecture.
