Description
Oil painting portrait of the artist Frances D. Ellis by her teacher Antonio Dattilo Rubbo. The portrait shows Ellis seated on a red cane chair, with a striped cloth seat cushion, twisted to face the viewer. She is wearing dark clothes with a green plaid scarf around her neck and the blue brimmed hat on her head. She is holding a copy of the Studio magazine. To her left is a small round side table on which are several more magazines and a ceramic jar with a number of paintbrushes in it. Behind the small table is a tall stored wooden easel and a stretched canvas facing the yellow wall immediately behind the subject. At the upper left is a tall narrow mirror which reflects the back of the subject's head and shows some small pictures hanging on the opposite wall of the room (behind the viewer). At upper right is a small artwork of a woman in a pale grey/blue dress reclining, framed in a gilt frame, hanging on the wall. To the right of the subject is a blue curtain.
