gone.

TOWARDS
THE
CENTRE
is
the
decision
to
displace
The
Wrestlers.
As
such,
its
replacement
is
not
part
of
the
work.
It
is
entirely
up
to
the
gallery
staff,
the
Council,
the
public
of
Wanganui,
to
decide
whether
it
will
return.
If
it
does
return,
TOWARDS
THE
CENTRE
will
go.
There
is
no
middle
ground.
The
Gallery
has
been
put
on
the
spot.
This means that as long as ‘The Wrestlers’ are not in the centre of the dome, Apple's work remains intact"

Part of Apples 1979/1980 tour of 9 New Zealand galleries called "The Given as an Art-Political Statement". At the Sarjeant the intervention/alteration in the gallery space was to move 'The Wrestlers' from the centre of the dome. Apple said of it –" ‘The Wrestlers’ has gone. Most simply described TOWARDS THE CENTRE is the decision to displace The Wrestlers. As such, its replacement is not part of the work. It is entirely up to the gallery staff, the Council, the public of Wanganui, to decide whether it will return. If it does return, TOWARDS THE CENTRE will go. There is no middle ground. The Gallery has been put on the spot.
