Towards the Centre (signed poster)

Billy Apple, Artist

This is one of the photographs in our collection. It was made in Whanganui, Whanganui Region, New Zealand in 1979.
About the Work
Part of Apples 1979/1980 tour of New Zealand galleries. At the Sarjeant the intervention/alteration in the gallery space was to move 'The Wrestlers' from the centre of the dome.
Apple said of it – ‘The Wrestlers’ has gone. Most simply described TOWARDS THE CENTRE is the decision to displace The Wrestlers. As such, its replacement is not part of the work. It is entirely up to the gallery staff, the Council, the public of Wanganui, to decide whether it will return. If it does return, TOWARDS THE CENTRE will go. There is no middle ground. The Gallery has been put on the spot.
This means that as long as ‘The Wrestlers’ are not in the centre of the dome, Apple's work remains intact.
