The
series,
based
on
colour
fields,
was
a
departure
from
his
earlier
grid
based
formats.
In
'Grey
Albus
No.
10'
the
grid
still
has
a
subtle
presence
with
tiny
grey
squares
widely
spaced
across
the
entire
painted
surface.
Black
underpainting
is
visible
through
the
top
layer
of
white
paint,
hinting
at
darker
things
below
the
surface
and
turning
the
white
paint
to
various
shades
of
grey.
Albus is the Latin for 'white'. It is also a geomantic figure associated with water and air representing peace, wisdom and purity. The term has a number of other meanings including white without lustre, bright or clear, fortunate or auspicious, pale, fair and grey.
