Rain Rain

John Coley, Artist

This is one of the prints in our collection. It was made in Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand in 1968.
About the Work
Artist, and former director of the Christchurch Art Gallery, John Coley travelled to the United States of America in 1964 on a Queen Elizabeth Arts Council, where he was drawn to the Pop Art aesthetics that were dominating the international art scene. 'Rain Rain' utilises the strong graphic imagery of pop art to combine line, text, colour and whimsy.
"John Coley, after a visit to the USA in 1964, formed the 20/20 Vision group with several other young Canterbury artists who were students in the late 1950s and early 1960s. In many respects 20/20 Vision helped reinforce the link Canterbury artists had with the contemporary art styles and was a stimulus for future development" Neil Roberts- Exhibition text from Forty Out of Forty at the Robert MCdougall art gallery, 31 Oct 1997 – 24 Jan 1998.
