About the Work
Five photographers were commissioned by the New Zealand Sugar Company to produce a portfolio of images to mark the Company's Centenary in September 1984. The theme of the project was the Chelsea Sugar refinery site in Birkenhead, Auckland and the exhibition consisted of the five artist's individual responses to the factory and the people who worked in it.
The five artists were Laurence Aberhart, Gillian Chaplin, Bruce Foster, Ann Noble and Peter Peryer. They brought a range of styles, interests and format to the project with no restriction placed on their work.
