About the Work
This image shows the Whanganui town wharf which was located immediately down river from the town bridge, near where Trafalgar Square shopping centre is located today. The town wharf was the focus of wharf activity until 1908 when Castlecliff Port was developed to service the frozen meat trade. By 1956 it was no longer economic to operate both ports so the town wharf was closed.
