About the Work
Mr
Hatrick's
houseboat,
the
'Makere',
on
the
Wanganui
River.
Built
in
1904,
the
boat
was
moored
on
the
right
bank
of
the
Ohura
River,
near
the
junction
with
the
Wanganui
River.
Constructed
in
Taumarunui,
the
vessel
had
no
power
and
its
92ft
length
and
20ft
beam
had
to
be
towed
to
its
anchorage
at
the
mouth
of
the
Ohura
River.
Electric
light,
flush
lavatories,
hot
and
cold
water
were
all
on
board.
The
lower
deck
had
18
cabins,
the
upper
deck,
an
open
lounge
with
deck
chairs,
a
smoking
room,
dining
room
for
30
people
with
a
piano
and
a
large
social
hall.
Used
as
a
floating
hotel,
the
houseboat
was
a
popular
stopover
destination
for
travellers.
Constructed
entirely
of
timber,
the
vessel
was
destroyed
by
fire
on
August
25,
1933.
