About the Work
With October being Whanganui Heritage Month, I was drawn to the images that evoked nostalgia. I’m not Whanganui born and bred, but it's architecture and art have captured my full attention. My selection of works captures some buildings that are no longer here, yet we still have the highest concentration of heritage buildings in New Zealand. Imagine Whanganui even 20 years ago and what we have lost – let’s hope more can be saved for the future generations to enjoy.
This little cutie is still standing and now re-loved. What really captures my interest is the stunning contrast between building and sky. An architectural fragment in space. You can just feel the summer heat!
- Helen Craig, Whanganui District Councillor & Whanganui Regional Heritage Trustee for the Oct 2020 instalment of the My Choice exhibition series.

In 1986 Aberhart was the inaugural Tylee artist in residence. The images made during his 12 months in Wanganui (and other nearby regions) act as an important documentation of the area and its environs. As a body of work they reflect the preoccupations present in Aberhart’s entire oeuvre: lodges, waiting rooms, Churches, rest areas, museum displays, beaches, light, marae, monuments and memorials. Empty places and spaces with culture and people as ghosts, hinted at but only rarely revealed.
