Matakite

Cliff Whiting, Artist

This is one of the sculptures in our collection. It was made in Aotearoa New Zealand in 1986.
About the Work
Matakite when used as a verb means to see into the future or foresee. When used as a noun it means a prophesy, prophet, seer, clairvoyant, or special intuition.
This work was made for the exhibition Te Ao Maori at the Sarjeant Gallery in 1989 and subsequently toured to Australia as part of Whatu Aho Rua in 1992.

The image of the woman is deliberately in the style of Western art and challenges attitudes of who is primitive? The tree form with the owl or flying bird has snakes or serpents twisting up the post with blacks, browns, ochres and whites.
