Description
The ability to make the familiar strange is apparent in Peter Peryer’s school ground map of New Zealand taken in 1991. It has been described both as a New Zealand shaped puddle and a satellite image.
At the bottom of the world, New Zealand risks sliding off. It also risks being forgotten, ignored and made to feel irrelevant. The requirement for New Zealand to make significant sporting achievements, has in a way, become a reminder the world that we exist. So, too, is the fascination with the shape of our country. It appears to remind ourselves that we exist.
The map of New Zealand, unique in its shape set in a deep frame of the Pacific Ocean is easily recognisable, ubiquitous throughout the nation. We are obsessed with mapping ourselves- not wanting to get lost and not wanting to be lost.
