About the Work
In 2010 the Sarjeant Gallery, in partnership with Te Manawa, launched a survey exhibition of Ann Verdcourt’s ceramics which toured the North Island. In that exhibition, curator Greg Donson said of Verdcourt’s referencing of, and admiration for, Italian artist Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964) -
“Morandi’s still lives or elements of them have been a preoccupation for Verdcourt for many years. She has long admired his quiet and unassuming still life paintings which focus on small arrangements of everyday domestic objects – vases, bowls, bottles, jugs and mugs. Morandi frequently painted the same objects in different arrangements. Here Verdcourt faithfully recreates Morandi’s still life from 1916 in clay.”
