Oban shin-hanga (polychrome woodblock print, in 'new print' tradition)
Description
This work though belonging to the later Meiji and early Taishō period shin-hanga – or ‘new print’ – tradition, echoes the works of the earlier period in its representation of a Yoshiwara district courtesan, or yujō – ‘woman for play’ in the ukiyo-e style Terukawa adopted for these subjects.
Illustrates aspects of the highly decorative and colourful nishiki-e ‘brocade print’ style, and demonstratse the apogee of nineteenth and early twentieth century woodblock print craftsmanship that represented the unique collaborative efforts of artist, publisher, block carver and printer
