About the Work
“Both the selection of photographs in the collection and Lenihan’s 2022 book of interconnected short stories, Kōhine, make me think of concepts of time within te ao Māori. The present cannot be understood without considering the past. Our understanding of ‘the present’ and ‘the future’ is informed by an ability to acknowledge the past. The kupu for ‘past’ in te reo Māori is ‘mua’ (in front/before/ahead) while the kupu for ‘future’ is muri (behind, at the rear of, after, afterwards, the time after,) the past and future are not separate, but part of a whole.” – Frances Stachl (Ngāpuhi) ‘Ōku Kōwhiri - My Choice’ autmun 2024
