Description
Through an extended series of line drawings Julian searches for images hinting at a hidden symbolism. Amongst a wide range of subject matter are several recurrent motifs which, he says ‘get beneath the surface of my life’. These include aeroplanes, time pieces, horizon lines, buildings, suns and lips.
After projecting these evocative drawings onto pre-painted canvases he meticulously paints them onto the canvas using pencil-thin brushes, thus ensuring the character and fluidity of the original drawings is retained. The most radical works are devoid of extraneous detail – simple figurative motifs floating in a minimalist ground (or should that be sky?). Even colour is pared back to whites, creamy yellows and cool greys.
