About the Work
Over
twenty
five
years
after
his
death
McCahon’s
influence
is
still
being
felt
through
a
new
generation
of
New
Zealand
artists.
In
a
post-modern
artistic
environment
this
influence
can
often
be
subtle.
Sarah
Buist’s
work
evokes
feelings
of
loss,
isolation
and
loneliness.
Paper
ships
drift
on
ocean
of
lines
as
a
plaintive
writer
asks,
‘where
are
you?’
over
and
over
again
like
the
lines
of
a
naughty
school
child.
The
pairing
of
two
monochrome
works
which
mix
figure
and
text
is
a
method
perfected
by
McCahon
and
used
hauntingly
by
Buist.
