About the Work
These banners were made for a chamber opera for the New Zealand High Commission in London. The Chamber Opera is called Hotspur and was composed by Gillian Whitehead in 1980. It is 35 minutes long and includes soprano, 2 clarinets, violin/viola, cello, and percussion. The text was by Fleur Adcock. Whitehead wrote the opera while she was composer-in-residence for Northern Arts (UK). It was commissioned by Gemini with funding from the British Council.
