‘Charmer’ is inspired by the French art movement Support/Surfaces, active in the late 1960s and early 1970s, who worked to reconstruct the foundational elements of painting (the canvas and the stretcher) and break from art tradition by freeing the canvas from the stretcher’s form. Parkes does this by hanging a dramatically rumpled canvas onto the stretcher, making the painted canvas the focal point of the work and creating a joyous three-dimensional form that emerges towards the viewer.
