Description
This drawing is part of a set selected from a larger group that were included in Braunias's exhibition Londontown in 2007 at the Sarjeant Gallery . They relate to the large oil painting London Town, also in the Sarjeant Collection.

"The exhibition title [mentioned above] takes its name from a former department store - Londontown - that was in Wanganui’s main street. Braunias was the Tylee Cottage artist-in-residence from March-May of 2007 and spent much of his time here trawling through old editions of the Wanganui Chronicle stored on microfiche in the Wanganui District Library’s Heritage Room. It wasn’t so much the articles that caught his eye but the adverts, of which Londontown had many. In this work he has assembled a cast of figures who he has rescued from the black and white oblivion of those advertisements and dressed them up in riotous colour and ridiculous costume" Extended exhibition lable Thisbe, Pheasbin and the Tall Tahitians June - Sep 2012. Greg Donson.
