About the Work
Ruby’s
Room
developed
between
1998
and
2007,
has
attracted
considerable
international
attention
for
its
highly
original
depiction
of
childhood.
Conceived
as
an
alternative
archaeology
of
childhood,
Anne,
in
association
with
her
daughter,
documented
some
of
the
many
things
children
do
with
their
mouths
while
eating
and
playing.
"In it's entirety, it operates on a number of levels. It is a documentation of childhood -seeing ones own child- noticing and remembering memories of one's own childhood. I was interested in overlooked moments, that when depicted might create discordant challenge to the adult romance with childhood as lost innocence etc. - They are a record of play, not a pursuit of the 'abject'.
MEMORY - like a litany the suite suggest an..I remember, I remember, I remember as with 'a little book of relics'...the effortof blowing that first bubble, the horror on the faces of the adults when truly disgusted, dreaming, thought, soap beards in the bath, a string around a loose tooth.
...the totality of this project is the result of observation over time. Like many projects of mine the outcome is a distillation of thinking about the subject CHILDHOOD-imagination and representation, seeing and cognition, imagination and memory and the medium of photography itself." Anne Noble
