Round Midnight 'July'

Ralph Hotere, Artist

This is one of the prints in our collection. It was made in Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand in 2000.
About the Work
One of Hotere’s longest standing collaborations was with master printmaker Marian Maguire who established printmaking business Limeworks from 1987, then PaperGraphica from 1994, in Christchurch. She first worked with Hotere in her final year at the School of Fine Arts at University of Canterbury in 1984, while Hotere was artist-in-residence, and went on to establish a professional relationship with him that lasted over twenty years.
One of Hotere’s most impressive lithographic projects – the ‘Round Midnight’ suite was produced in collaboration with Marian Maguire in 2000. The suite consists of thirteen works, twelve relating to the months of the year and a final image. It took close to a year to complete and was not produced in chronological sequence, with the prints only being titled in the final stage of the creative process. The title ‘Round Midnight’ was taken from a jazz composition by Thelonious Monk and each work contains two main elements: the double-barred Lorraine cross and the Latin cross. Hotere produced several works on black lacquered corrugated iron and aluminium with the same title and the lithography process allowed him to explore further tonal responses to the same subject. This exhibition gives us a rare opportunity to view the suite in its entirety.
