About the Work
'A
Foot
in
the
Door'
is
an
installation
of
one
foot
of
a
ruler
set
discreetly
and
non-visibly
into
the
front
door
of
the
Gallery.
The
work
explores
the
formalities
of
the
first
professional
contact
made
between
an
artist
and
a
gallery.
It
is
a
physical
manifestation
of
the
agreement
between
the
artist
and
gallery.
By
staging
this
installation
the
Sarjeant
Gallery
has
literally
given
the
artist
"a
foot
in
the
door"
and
has
helped
an
emerging
site
based
installation
artist
perform
an
ambitious
and
important
work
in
his
artistic
career.
This
installation
was
offered
to
a
number
of
Galleries
and
relevant
organisations.
Every
gallery
that
agreed
to
stage
the
work
further
ratified
the
conceptual
credibility
of
the
project.

Media
found wooden ruler installation
Description
A wooden ruler cut into thirds and glued together on top of each other. This was installed into the door frame of the front doors of the Sarjeant Gallery heritage building at Queen's Park. Brand is sovereign. Ruler has printed on it the different types of native NZ wood used in the ruler. Inscription on it states 'Barbara' in child's handwriting.
