About the Work
'A Foot in the Door' is an installation of one foot of a ruler set discreetly and non-visibly into the front door of the Gallery. The work explores the formalities of the first professional contact made between an artist and a gallery. It is a physical manifestation of the agreement between the artist and gallery. By staging this installation the Sarjeant Gallery has literally given the artist "a foot in the door" and has helped an emerging site based installation artist perform an ambitious and important work in his artistic career. This installation was offered to a number of Galleries and relevant organisations. Every gallery that agreed to stage the work further ratified the conceptual credibility of the project.

Description
"A Foot in the Door is a process/site-based art installation where one foot of a ruler is physically inserted into the front door of numerous New Zealand galleries. It refers to, and engages in, the politics involved in becoming an established artist."

"A Foot in the Door is an installation of one foot of a ruler set discreetly and non-visibly into the front door of your gallery/organisation.

Foot explores the formalities of first professional contact between an artist and gallery. The foot is the physical manifestation of the agreement between artist and gallery. By staging Foot the gallery has given the artist “a foot in the door”. The gallery has helped an emerging site based installation artist perform an ambitious and important work in his artistic career...

...Every gallery that agrees to stage Foot further ratifies the conceptual credibility of the project. Foot is as easily staged in a gallery that is rigidly themed as one that is loosely curated. No association with the current show is required. No money is involved — the work is a gift. No publicity is sought except through documentation of the project in the artists’ promotional practice —artist talks, CV, etc.

Foot can be installed in any gallery at any time. Installation of Foot is elementary in a wide range of doors, and furthermore it does not have to be de-installed, as the final work will not be visible. The installation will be carried out by either the artist (currently employed as a Fine Art Technician at Massey University Wellington), a professional in the field of your particular front door, or by a technician of your choice."
