protests

Brown

Clairmont
were
involved
in
Auckland.
Clairmont
was
a
great
admirer
of
the
German
Expressionists
persecuted
by
the
Nazis
but
also
depicted
himself
as
a
Christ
figure
hence
the
swastikas
spiraling
into
a
Christian
cross.

partner
Rachel
+
mother
Thelma
were
mentioned
in
a
larger
painting
similar
to
this
drawing.
The
[this]
drawing
has
not
been
exhibited
but
has
had
restoration
work
for
foxing.
Regards
the
Riot
policeman
in
this
drawing
the
anti
tour
works
began
with
two
woodcuts
done
at
Maungamahu[sic]
whilst
staying
with
Clairmont.
Paintings
were
shown
in
1992
at
Louise
Beale
Gallery
to
a
hostile
reaction.
