About the Work
TRANSCRIPTION:
Dearest Edith
I hope your conscious will prick you when you see this writing for you haven’t answered my last epistle yet. Do send me some news of yourself & your doings. I had a fine letter from Harry last week. I was so glad to get it. I wrote to him at Christmas. He tells me you have sold many of your pictures; I’m very cheered to hear Wanganui appreciates your work in a sensible way. Have you got decent prices? The next question is even more important; are you turning out fresh work? Don’t forget you’ve to make history as the N.Z painter of the early 20th century. I wonder whether your grandmother is still alive – I suppose not. That was a big job you struck.
We are pushing along much as before. We are very pleased with our little grey house, it is a dear. You can imagine I had a task to persuade Mother to leave Beech House, but now she is very glad she made the change. Life is getting sorted out a bit all round. We got Clive off to Canada
Do you like his wife?
[illeg.] is marrying an old friend, (a poor one} in a fortnight. I don’t know how she will go on as she doesn’t even pretend to be much in love. Dick has been in love with her for ages & after a miserable time running her family she accepted him. Of course, she left the job too late, she is 30 now and [illeg.] been in love – I do hope she will make a good show. She has a tiny flat in Paris & insists that I shall go to her directly she is settled. I shall feel sick if she doesn’t seem happy. Did I tell you Susie Brierley [?] married her co-respondent?

I forget whether the wedding had [illeg.] off when I last wrote. She is [illeg.] more “respectable” as Mrs Nathan Isaacs!! I’ve given up writing to her – she is too modern for my taste. I swallowed the divorce but it was the way it was done that shocked me. Willie B married again the same day Sue did & all 4 had lunch together after it. That was more than I can stand. It sounds promiscuous. I’m pegging along with my work and enjoying it. I get tired but freshen up again. I’ve been re-appointed with a small increase of salary so shant be on “the dole” for a few years yet. Must fly. Do write me a line. Fondest love, Fannie

Aunt Ada is more incredible than ever. She looks about 28 & much more healthy & energetic than 99% of the 28 year olds!
