My dear Miss Collier
I wonder if your destination – New Zealand or the South of France – has been settled yet! I do hope it has & in the way you wish. What a time of suspense if must have been for you.

I have just returned to this place of [illeg.] & gloom after a few days in Buckinghamshire where I revelled in hours [illeg.] beech woods – Burnham Beeches on Saturday was a place to dream in! we lost our way & finally stumbled out of the wood on [illeg.] a little inn, where we had tea & then [illeg.] home in the dark. It was the first long walk I had had since you & I went to Gurnard’s Head, & how I enjoyed it. Have the Australians gone back yet? They promised to write to me, & to come to supper with me in London, before they did but I have heard nothing so far. If they are by any chance in St Ives do tell them I am expecting them! Have you come across M. Smel, a Beligium [illeg.] who has been & perhaps still is living at

St Ives. He had a one man show during October at the Burlington Gallery in Leicester Square. It was [illeg.] still life though there were one or two portraits & one or two interiors. His pictures were a blaze of colour & I thoroughly enjoyed them. If you come across him in St Ives & have an opportunity of seeing his work do take it. Mis [sic] Hodgkin must know him. I wonder what she thinks of it.
