Jan 9th – 1917
My dear Edith
I duly received your note & Reg’s address. I am sorry I have not yet been able to send him a little parcel but if his address is altered perhaps you will let me know. You will be very sorry to hear my sad news which is that I lost my beloved husband on Dec 2nd, he was in a Nursing House in Manchester & had undergone an opperation [sic] which was quite successful & we hoped soon to be home again but other things went wrong & he passed away on Saturday Dec 2nd. Of course we brought him home & he is laid to rest in Edale, peaceful church yard.
David was able to be with us but neither of the other two. John had been home since, he left again last Wednesday. Did you know he is engaged to a very nice girl. Dorie Bacon. We have known her since she was a child & both his father & I were very pleased. He has also got the Military Cross – his name was in the New Years lists. Donald I am hoping will be home soon. I am very sorry for him being so far away. Mrs Boue is here at present. She came while John was home. Hope you have good news from home & also of Reg. With love.

Letter written to Edith Collier by Agnes Hardy, 9 Jan 1917. Handwritten on both sides of a single sheet of paper, folded down the centre, then across the middle. Letterhead is imprinted in the paper support "Rowland Cote. Edale. via Sheffield." Addressed to "My dear Edith"
