About the Work
This is most likely a photograph taken by W.J. Harding and printed by Frank Denton, as Frank took over some of the Harding negatives when he set up his own photography studio. Frank Denton's earlier studio was located behind the buildings to the right, closer to the Whanganui River. Located behind where Whanganui Furniture is located today.

Description
Black and white photograph of Victoria Avenue in Whanganui looking towards the Putiki hills and the Whanganui River. The street is unsealed, lined with wooden buildings, with a row of horse drawn carriages at the right foreground. In the centre of the image is the intersection of Victoria Avenue and Ridgway Street, prior to the installation of the Watt Fountain (installed in 1881). The early Post Office with clock tower is visible at the right.
