About the Work
"A blurring of the earthly and heavenly realms became a feature of many Baroque religious paintings. In Wanganui's Appearance of the blessed Virgin to St Maurice by Domenico Piola (1627-1703) [Fig. 58, overleaf], the apparition brought about by the saints religious fervour is revealed between the branches of a tree, placing the Virgin and her upheld child within reach of the human hand. The sense of immediacy is heightened by the paintings unusual frame, its black background standing as a foil for the arabesque of flowers which weave around it. It is tempting to think that it might have been Domenico's brother-in-law Stefano Camogli, who specialised in such effects. The small scale of the painting suggests it is a bozzetto or sketch for a larger composition, or perhaps for the production of a print."
