About the Work
Made early in the artists career while he was experimenting with his understanding of regionalism, before he began to make his cut - out works which he became affiliated with. As with other earlier regionalist work which employed the use of text modelled after the Italian primitivists, the text gives a local context and ownership of the land, the artist and the work itself - hinting that while this subject may be in an otherwise homogenous landscape, he is reading what could be the Auckland star, (where he has also signed his name and dated the work) intimating that this painting most likely belongs to Auckland, if not New Zealand at the very least.
