About the Work
Athol McCredie writes:
"Glenn Jowitt’s photographs of Pacific Islanders…can be assumed to have political intentions insofar as they also ‘bring to awareness’ by presenting a positive, sympathetic picture of the richness of various island cultures. Jowitt’s apparent wish to counter the Polynesia of the tourist brochure by offering an alternative, ‘truer’ view does, however, run the risk of his photographs being read with no less a tourist sensibility than the brochures. Polynesian life, it can be argued, is something to be experienced, not viewed on a gallery wall."

Description
Colour photograph of a bedroom interior focussed on a single bed covered in a pink flowery bedspread. Laid out on the bed are eight straw hats in two rows of four. The hats are all different colours with floral decorations on them made out of the straw. The room has a floral carpet and the gauzy curtains have an orange floral design. The light is coming in through the window above the head of the bed creating a light shadow on the wall of the slatted blinds.
