About the Work
Athol McCredie writes:
"Glenn Jowitt’s photographs of Pacific Islanders…can be assumed to have political intentions insofar as they also ‘bring to awareness’ by presenting a positive, sympathetic picture of the richness of various island cultures. Jowitt’s apparent wish to counter the Polynesia of the tourist brochure by offering an alternative, ‘truer’ view does, however, run the risk of his photographs being read with no less a tourist sensibility than the brochures. Polynesian life, it can be argued, is something to be experienced, not viewed on a gallery wall."

Description
Colour photograph showing a man wearing dark trousers, a white striped shirt and black tie standing with his hands clasped and his eyes looking at his feet, possibly praying a blessing over the food laid out at his feet. At his feet is a row of six woven baskets from green leaves containing a variety of food (including fish?). He is standing in a grassy field, in the background is a red roofed building, a number of other smaller buildings and homes, with palm trees scattered between them.
