Jowitt’s apparent wish to counter the Polynesia of the tourist brochure by offering an alternative, ‘truer’ view does, however, run the risk of his photographs being read with no less a tourist sensibility than the brochures. Polynesian life, it can be argued, is something to be experienced, not viewed on a gallery wall."
