About the Work
After
a
career
in
teaching,
Barbara
McPhail’s
retirement
in
1979
enabled
her
to
devote
more
time
to
her
passion
-
painting.
For
McPhail
it
all
started
on
a
visit
to
her
sister
in
Nelson.
So
impressed
had
she
been
by
the
sea
views
and
surrounding
hills
seen
on
the
ferry
crossing,
she
immediately
bought
canvas,
paint
and
brushes
and
climbed
a
nearby
hill
to
paint
the
vista
below.
Back in Wanganui, McPhail enrolled in Ted Lewis’s ‘night tech’ art class at Boys’ College (now City College). Mrs Esme Hawkins, another teacher, convinced her to join the Arts Society, through which she discovered painting en plein air; ‘You get something from being on the spot - even if it’s just mosquito bites’.
