About the Work
Taken from an original painting by Charles Blomfield this image was reproduced as a chromolithograph and included as a fold-out plate at the back of E. Wakefield’s New Zealand Illustrated, published by A.D. Willis Ltd in 1889. While Blomfield did not witness the eruption himself he created this image from either his imagination or based on eye-witness accounts of the event. The lithographer was William Potts. The book was printed and published by A.D. Willis Ltd of Whanganui.

Description
Night silhouette image of a mountain erupting, the red sky is full of falling ash and clouds of smoke, in the middle ground is a lake and a Māori village with figures running away, a small river winds from the lake into the foreground of the image.
This is a page detached from its original published form, as a fold-out plate at the back of E. Wakefield's 'New Zealand Illustrated', published in 1889.
