About the Work
This devotional piece was a commission for Peter’s 50th birthday and was designed to be installed in an apartment, with the large paintings placed at either end of the hall and the folk art objects, or lares, placed along the length of the hall. Lares were guardian deities from ancient Roman religion who were believed to observe, protect and influence all that happened within the boundaries of their location and function. The lares in this installation are represented by bread, wine, and kitchen utensils and were hung opposite the kitchen, bedroom, and living room in the apartment.
