About the Work
This is a photograph of early NZ Modernist painter Edith Collier (b.1885, d.1964) probably taken in Whanganui prior to Edith's 1913 departure to the UK to study at St John's Wood School of Art in London.
The photographer Annie Davis was well known to Edith as there is correspondence between Annie's sister Ethel and Edith in the Edith Collier Trust Archive.
Annie Davis owned a studio, together with photograph Emily Collis, in Whanganui's Ridgway Street from 1899-1901. She subsequently moved to Auckland where she had her images published in the Auckland Weekly news in 1911 and 1912.
