My dear Ed.
For the last two hours I have been teaching Rose Leslie to do sums so Iam [I am] teacher as you are, but in a small + lowly way. I am afraid I couldnt [sic] go out and [illegible] my [illegible] out of one [illegible] like. I have never concentrated my mind nor shown any determination like you possess, although I am only a chicken yet. You have beaten me easily by sheer strength of mind and perseverance. I hope you are getting on well at the College. I suppose you are well cultivated in the powers of observation I noticed when I was down how observant you were becoming it is something worth cultivating. It is wonderful what you see in a person through a stranger, people seemed to wear what they are, on their outward appearance and by observation one can read deep. I hope you are in no way offended with me I gave Vera a birth-day present and to you who has been my favourite I have given nothing. I had good intentions but never carried them out through being up here last time. Last letter mum wrote to me and said you [missing] practising the cello it is good you have not given it up. Do you intend to in for higher examinations. I should think that having to contend with all your pupils you would be much handicapped but you were always resolute and that carries. This is my third letter tonight which is not bad for me being a poor writer. Jack who has just come in tells me its [sic] getting onto midnight so it is best if I want any rest to close. I hope you are keeping well and not getting brain-fog or delirious tremors as is all the fashion nowadays.
Your loving brother
Harry
