About the Work
My dear Collier
You are a naughty girl you know but as you are also very nice I suppose I shall have to forgive you. It was sweet of you to send that present by Charlie. I have had it put away in the hold, & so didn’t have time to study it properly but I am looking forward to doing that when we get to Grahamstown. I am looking forward to getting there as this voyage has seemed very long, & we have a least another week before getting to Cape [illeg.].
We spent a day & a half at Lisbon after leaving England & we had a funny time trying to buy things there. As the shop-men didn’t know any English & we knew no Portugese [Portuguese] we had to do a lot of gesticulation, but we got what we wanted in the end. At one shop I bought some [illeg.] ornaments & figures & just as I was leaving the man stuffed an extra ornament into a bag! At another shop I bought a tie & gave the man 2/6 & he gave me in change 2/5! I tried to explain, but he politely moved me out of the shop! We saw some Portugese (Portuguese) soldiers here – such funny little men, who looked very weany.
Write to me sometimes Collier like a dear & keep an eye on that scamp of a sister of mine.
Love from
Amy Aylift.
