My Dear Edith,
I have had no letter from you since my last to you, so there will not be any questions to answer.
Today is Bills birthday just [illeg.] he is thirteen, we think, he is very tall for his age but Gordon Pepper is only ten and is about half a head taller, they have both been making toffee for themselves as a treat, it has turned out very good, I must [illeg.] he is more successful than you were [illeg.] old, you always made it (toffee) when things didn’t quite go well with you, so we called it “consolation toffee”.
Today has been a day for the children at the Church “The Sunday school anniversary” so the choir was composed of children and their teachers, much to fathers disgust, it was very [illeg.] music, it seems a pity to upset the usual service in this way, there was to have been a solo & duet, but it was too much for fathers musical ears.
They are all back again so will soon have to put this away, [illeg.] has been staying here, he is leaving for Camp, he is going as Leiutenant of the field engineers, his work will be very risky as they go before the firing line laying mines and surveying trenches, Norman R leaves for the front in a few weeks, I think he will get a few shocks before he gets to the front, he is so ever polite.
We see very little of Minna now.
Aunt Harriette is staying at Grandma’s, she seems to have [illeg.] settled home yet, and frets about [illeg.]. I am sending a slip of the hospital for [illeg.] N.Zealanders in England, you might be [illeg.] there sometime with [illeg.] fruit or some [illeg.] Bill is telling you all the news, so will [illeg.] with much love
From your loving Mother
P.S. Do you ever hear anything of John Hardy
