Dear mother & father
Harry was up last Saturday & stayed alnighter [?] here, he was studying hard the whole time & went up for an exam yesterday & I do hope he gets through alright, they have very little time for study up at 5’o’clock for drill & for each subject they have to tramp about to different places, two or three nights a week bomb throwing. They have to know all the different movements of the Army & all sorts of signals to the Infantry Artillery etc & then different signals from air to them & have to know all about the machines & bombs they use, & draw maps – that is just a little they have to learn.
It is very lucky that Harry is so close it is only 40 minutes from London he asked me to write for him as this week he hasn’t a second to [illeg.] one. If he had arrived 3 days earlier he would have had some leave as the school starts at the beginning of every month. H- looks very well had a cold since he has bee here, but is better now – of course he hasn’t seen much of London. When he comes up to London to he stays here, he likes the small rooms I have on the roof.
We are having lovely weather just now this last week. We heard from Reg this last week & he was alright – the parcel you sent (a cake in a round tin) arrived 2 days ago & I sent it off, it ought to be alright. I also received £1 from Mrs Russell [illeg.] miss Harry for Alan & Jack tell her I’ll send the things to her boys of course I haven’t finished the other £1 yet if I have time I’ll drop her a line.
An Auckland paper came for H & also a lot of letters for him. H – wants he & I to have our photo taken soon when he gets a day off. Harry received £50 from father through the N.Z Bank last Sat April 28th he gets some money as soon as he has finished this theory & [illeg.] I think but in meantime costs him £2 a week. gets his money in a fortnight, being officer costs much more to live. he looks very handsome in his uniform, I must close [illeg.] with love to all from daughter Edith.
P.S Hal is at Cadford- [illeg.] Russells [illeg.] are joining them there.
