UNVEILING OF MEMORIAL PORTRAIT AT THE SARJEANT GALLERY, WANGANUI - On Friday November 22, a portrait of the late Sergeant-Pilot J.A. Ward, V.C., was unveiled at the Sarjeant Gallery, Wanganui. It is a painting by Oswald Birley, R.A., R.O.I., and the unveiling was performed by the late Sergeant Ward's parents, Mr. and Mrs. P.H. Ward, Wanganui. The painting is on loan from the New Zealand National Gallery, Wellington, and will remain in Wanganui six months. Photograph shows the official party after the unveiling (from left to right): Mr. C.R. White (town clerk), the Hon. W.J. Rogers, M.L.C. (Mayor of Wanganui), Miss Lesley Mayne, Wellington (grand-daughter of Mr and Mrs Ward), Mrs Ward, Mr Ward, Mr. G. Hawkins (chairman of the Sarjeant Gallery committee), Mr. J.B.F. Cotterill (M.P. for Wanganui), and Mr. H.C. Jenkins (of the Arts and Crafts Society).
