Description
Monochrome aquatint print on paper showing a street scene in Avignon, southern France. The scene focuses on the Palais des Papes (Palace of the Popes) an historical palace located at Avignon. In the scene at the centre is a tall tower structure with a pointed finial at the roof, to the right is a crenelated medieval tower, below the buildings are the silhouettes of a variety of trees and shrubs. At the left are several statues and in the foreground is a group of three tiny figures facing each other. A key feature of the image is the use of shadow on the facades of the buildings which contrast with the light on the side of the central tower.
