In 1988 the Alexander Turnbull Library commissioned eight New Zealand professional photographers to make a documentary record of some of the hundreds of local post offices that closed in February that year. The photographers were asked to take photographs of post office buildings, staff, customers and activities between 26 January and 29 February 1988, during the last days of business. The photographers chosen for the project were Jan Nauta, Laurence Aberhart, Ans Westra, Christopher Matthews, Peter Black, Fiona Clark, Peter Richie, and Paul McCredie. The project gained the sponsorship of New Zealand Post and help from the Post Office Union.
