Baye Riddell

Biography
Born 10 August 1950, Baye began working with clay in Christchurch in 1974. He currently resides in his tribal area on the East Coast, Tokomaru Bay and Gisborne where he has been working since 1979.

Baye began his vocation as a ceramicist at the age of 23. He won a Fullbright scholarship in 1989 and travelled to the USA with his colleague Manos Nathan. This visit resulted in ongoing international networks, exchange visits and exhibitions with Native American artists and ceramicists. He is co-founder of the group ‘Nga Kaihanga Uku a Maori’ and continues to spread the gospel through his work according to the principles of Christianity and Maoritanga.

'Mine is a simple clay - rugged and spiritual. My clay I dig from a swamp on ancestral family land and it is prepared with care and respect.'
